Improving the Appearance of Scars
As skin heals after acne, surgery, or other trauma such as a cut or burn, scar tissue sometimes forms. Scars may be raised or sunken, red or white, very visible or almost invisible. But, if a scar bothers you, it’s important to speak with a dermatologist for advice.
Many cosmetic dermatology procedures exist to help improve the appearance of scars. In some cases, minor scars may almost disappear.
Silicone sheets may be used soon after a scar is formed to minimize the final appearance of scars. Many creams claim to improve the appearance of scars. Unfortunately, there is no scientific data to support claims that a specific cream such as vitamin E that can improve scars.
Often, more than one technique may be used to get the best results. For instance, deeply set, pitted scars often require a filler to decrease roughness, plump up depressions and reduce discoloration.

The type of treatment recommended will depend on your skin and the type of scar, its location, your availability for recovery time and your budget. Some procedures can be performed in one appointment and require little recovery time. Other procedures require multiple appointments and extensive recovery time.
Severe scars may require surgery. If that’s the case, Dr. Niroomand may perform minor surgical procedures to make the scars amenable to other treatment modalities.
