One of the most common questions we are asked at Uptown Dermatology is, “What can you do about the dark circles under my eyes?”
The answer is: There are many treatments that can help reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. But, which treatment will work best for you depends on the reasons behind your situation.
There are multiple causes for dark circles under the eyes. These include:
- Allergies (hay fever)
- Fatigue
- Hollowness due to thinner, aging skin (loss of collagen)
- Veins (heredity and certain ethnicities)
Allergies sometimes cause dark circles because people rub and scratch their itchy eyes. This results in redness, puffiness and sometimes dermatitis. Treating your allergies will help reduce these symptoms.
Dark circles that appear when you’re tired may only be improved with adequate sleep.
If your dark circles are the result of aging skin that has become thinner, fillers that plump up the skin under the eyes may help. In our office, we use fillers such as silicone and Restylane.
Laser therapy is often used when the dark circles are the result of wrinkles and sun damage.
Chemical peels and creams may also be used to treat dark circles under the eyes, alone or in combination with other treatments.
Contrary to common wisdom, no dietary supplements will help reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. Sometimes, a cold compress or chilled teaspoon laid gently on the eyes will help improve dark circles by constricting the blood vessels under the eyes.
